Honorarium Guidelines

A priest must always serve his parishioners freely.  Catholics never pay for blessings or the sacramental ministries of the church, which are the right of each baptized member of the church and every priest’s duty.

However, custom, in the spirit of Luke 10:7, suggests that an honorarium--a free-will monetary offering given to a priest or cleric for spiritual or religious services rendered--may be given to the priest for their involvement in services such as baptisms, weddings and funerals. Honorariums serve as an expression of gratitude and respect and help cover the associated parish expenses.  (Please note that in our area, most funeral homes take care of honorariums for the priest as part of their services.)

A person wishing to express appreciation to the priest with an honorarium should consider what they feel is an appropriate amount in each situation based on the individual’s experience and financial situation.

Special Mass Intentions

The Diocese of Dodge City has established $10.00 as the standard stipend for a special Mass intention, but individuals are free to offer more or less, dependent on their own financial circumstances.
